How much does Interior painting cost?
Interior painting is a spectacular way to make your house a home. With paint, your interior space can look larger, lighter, cleaner and more modern. How much does quality painting from a professional house painter cost? In this article, we’ll cover house painting estimate costs and what goes into the numbers.
1- Make a list
When it comes time to hire residential painting services you may wonder how much it will cost you. The first thing you should do is take a walk around your home and note the areas that you want to improve with painting. Do you want to just have the wall painting or ceiling painting performed? Or maybe the trim painting and the ceiling only? Making a list will organize your thoughts and also make the list the same for everyone that comes to your home to give you a price for interior painting. This way you can compare price to paint based on the same list of interior painting needs.
2- Do you have the time to paint?
You may know how to paint interior walls yourself or have a general idea of how to paint the house interior. Chances are you’ve looked for professional painting tips and tricks or interior painting techniques on YouTube or somewhere else on the web. The biggest issue is that you just don’t have the time to do it yourself or have the necessary tools which means it will take you several weekends or even months to get your interior painting project completed.
3- Hiring a Pro
This is where hiring a professional residential painting company makes your life easier and your home more beautiful. Painting contractors have all the tools necessary to get the job done which also saves you time shopping for tools and sundries you may only use one time. Professional painters will get your wall painting, ceiling painting, and trim painting completed with ease and best of all, you will get your weekends back since you don’t have to do it.
So, how much does it cost to hire a professional interior painting service? Here’s a quick example.
4- Typical room details
There are many factors that lead to the cost of interior painting. When you get prices from a handful of painting contractors you’ll see that prices can vary. Let’s cover the cost to paint an average bedroom in a home. We’ll assume the room is 12 feet by 12 feet with 8-foot tall ceilings. The room has an entry door (raised panel door), 2 windows (casing only), baseboards and a closet door (raised panel door). These are all the surfaces in a common bedroom. For pricing, all surfaces are being painted 2 coats.
5- Product costs
In this bedroom, you’ll need 1 gallon of wall paint, 1 gallon of ceiling paint and 1 gallon of woodwork paint. Cheap interior paint would cost about $80-100 for these 3 gallons. Higher quality paint for these 3 gallons will be about $150 for the same 3 gallons. Most professional painters will opt for the better paint since the cost difference is minimal and the results would be better and faster. So far our costs are $150 for paint.
6- Material Costs
Interior painting supplies: Paint doesn’t apply itself, unfortunately, it takes tools and sundries to paint any interior room. Roller covers, drop cloths, paint brushes, ladders, extension poles, sandpaper, patching compounds……. the list is long. For this bedroom, we’ll assume $45 in miscellaneous items. If you had to purchase each of these for the first time it would be more than the $45. Bedroom painting cost so far: $195 (150+45)
7- Interior painting techniques
Setup/ masking/ patching: Every bedroom has items in it that need to be removed or masked to keep paint off. Light switch covers, doorknobs, window treatments, covering the floor, and masking items need to be completed. Patching minor blemishes too. We’ll allot 2 hours to this.
Painting the ceiling:
The ceiling will be painted with 2 coats. Cut in and rolled by hand will take a professional painter about 3 hours.
Painting the walls:
Cut in and rolling paint 2 coats will take approximately 5 hours.
Painting the woodwork:
Painting interior doors, baseboards, and windows takes attention to detail. Two coats of paint on these items will take approximately 4 hours
Cleanup:
Unmasking, cleanup, and removal of all tools and materials: 2 hours
8- Adding it all up:
Alright, for an average residential interior painting contractor a bedroom will take approximately 16 hours and $195 in materials. Assuming how much painters charge per hour at the rate of $50/ hour that leads to the cost of $995 to paint a bedroom. Of course, these costs will vary on the quality of the paint, charge rate and how much attention to detail the painting company gives the project.
There are many intangible items that affect the cost to paint a house too. Painting contractors and professional painters, along with their experience, can help you with interior painting color tips and painting interior walls color ideas. They know professional painting tips and tricks, methods to achieve the best painting, and make it look easy because they paint every day.
