Here are a few ways to ensure you are protected:
Are they registered with the state they do business in? Here is Massachusetts if they have INC, LLC or LLP after their name you can check the Corporate Database by business name or owners name. If they are a DBA(doing business as) it is harder to get immediate verification.
Do they have a license? No, not a drivers license. A Home Improvement Contractors License(HIC). Also required in Massachusetts: “for contractors performing improvements or renovations on detached one and two family homes.” which can be checked here
At a minimum you should check the painting contractors insurance. Get a binder with your name on it as “additionally insured” If the business is insured the basic requirements of being a business have been checked by the insuring company.
